This is an example of a Deluxe Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle that was manufactured in 1889. This Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle has a blue full octagon barrel and full length magazine with color casehardened receiver, forearm cap, hammer and lever. The "extra finished" pistol grip stock and forearm are highly figured fancy grain walnut with Style H checkered panels. The stock has an ebony inlay in the pistol grip and a steel shotgun buttplate. The rifle has a special order single set trigger, tang mounted folding combination rear sight, barrel-mounted Winchester Express rear sight with two folding leaves and platinum sighting lines, and a Winchester Express front sight with ivory bead. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/- WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS Co. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. -" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber "45-70" is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat just ahead of the receiver. The serial number, "48668" and the 1884 and 1885 patent dates are roll-stamped on the lower receiver tang.
BBL: 26 inch octagon

Serial Number: 48668
Condition: Very fine. The barrel, magazine, bolt and loading gate have nearly 90% of the slightly faded original blue finish remaining. There are several light vice marks on the barrel flats immediately ahead of the receiver. The buttplate has a mottled silver-gray patina with traces of the original blue finish. The case colors are 60% intact, mostly on the receiver sides with the forearm cap and lever being mostly a thin silver patina. The sides and top of the receiver and the balance of the hammer, lever and forearm cap have strong case colors. The left side of the receiver has scattered pitting (some deep) overall. The fancy grain stock and forearm are both very fine. The checkered panels are sharp and 95% of the highly polished "extra finish" is intact. The stock and forearm have a few scattered handling marks. All of the markings are sharp. This is a good looking example of a Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle with special order set-trigger,Winchester Express front and rear sights, and folding combination tang sight.
