Manufactured in 1891. The top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight is marked "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A.-" and "40-60 W.C.F." at the breech. The serial number is marked on the lower tang with the patent date marking directly behind the trigger. The rifle features a 28 inch #3 part octagon barrel with a blade front and adjustable buck horn rear sights. There is a tang mounted short range peep sight. Single set trigger, casehardened receiver, lever and buttplate, and mounted with a deluxe, nicely figured checkered walnut Schnabel tip forearm with ebony forend insert and pistol grip stock with ebony insert on the bottom of the grip and a crescent buttplate. The accompanying factory letter verifies the rifle configuration, caliber, #3 28 inch part octagon barrel, set trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, graduated peep and Beach sights (no longer present on rifle) and that it was received in the warehouse on May 5, 1891 and shipped from the warehouse the next day on order number 3964.

Condition: Very fine. The barrel retains 60% original thinning blue finish with scattered smooth plum patina. The receiver retains 65% original case colors with a smooth silver gray on the balance. The lever and buttplate have a smooth mottled gray patina with some muted original case colors in the protected areas of the lever. The wood is fine with 70% original varnish remaining showing some scattered minor scratches and dents, with crisp checkering. The markings remain clear. The action needs work as the trigger is frozen in place.
