Special Order Winchester Model 1873 Sporting Rifle with Thirty-Inch Barrel and Set Trigger
Winchester Third Model 1873 Rifle manufactured in 1891. The rifle has a special order 30-inch octagon barrel with full length magazine and single set trigger. The barrel is fitted with a front sight with nickel-silver blade and a set-screw on the base and a sporting style rear sight. The crescent buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor. The butt trap contains a jointed, five-piece, steel cleaning rod with brass tip. The rifle has the Third Model integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated edges. The knurling on the hammer spur has a decorative upper border. The barrel, magazine, forearm cap and receiver have blue finish. The loading gate and trigger are niter blue. The hammer, loading lever and buttplate have a color case-hardened finish. The stock and forearm are straight-grain black walnut with a varnish finish. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS.NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A. / -KING'S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29.1866 OCTOBER 16.1860-" ahead or the rear sight and the caliber, "38 W.C.F." just ahead of the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL. 1873" in fancy letters with foliate designs at either end. "38 CAL" is engraved on the bottom of the cartridge elevator. The serial number, "427495B" is located on the lower receiver tang behind the loading lever latch.

Condition: The rifle is in very fine condition and retains nearly 90% of the original blue and casehardened finish. The barrel has nearly all of the blue finish; the blue on the bottom of the magazine is thinning slightly. There is handling wear and moderate finish loss on the side plates, sides, top of the receiver and upper tang. The loading gate and trigger have most of the fiery niter blue finish. The hammer and sides of the loading lever retain strong case colors, the bottom of the loading lever and buttplate have a silver-gray patina. The markings on the barrel and receiver are crisp. The bore is bright. The stock and forearm are very fine - excellent with nearly all of the original varnish finish and some scattered and very minor handling marks. This is a very fine example of a rare Winchester Model 1873 Rifle with special order thirty-inch barrel and set-trigger.
