Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 94
Manufactured in 1899, this rifle features a rare extra light tapered 26 inch octagon barrel and rare trapdoor buttplate. These rapid taper extra light barrels were normally round with only a few octagon. This rifle is a very early extra light variation with the dovetailed Lyman blade front sight. Winchester learned very quickly how dangerously thin the barrel material could get under the dovetail cut, especially very critical on larger caliber barrels, so almost all of the extra light guns were found with ramped front sights with the ramp either integral to or silver soldered to the barrel. These trapdoors were not provided on 1894s except by special order only, however many had a hole drilled to reduce weight, but had no trapdoor buttplates. The barrel is fitted with a Lyman three leaf rear sight and there is a tang mounted short range tang sight. The top barrel flat is marked with the two line address ahead of the rear sight and "30 W.C.F." at the breech. The 1893 patent date is marked on the takedown lever and the serial number is marked on the bottom of the receiver. The rifle is mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with factory sling eyes and a crescent buttplate. The accompanying factory letter verifies the extra light octagon barrel takedown rifle configuration, caliber, plain trigger, Lyman front and rear sights, 1/2 magazine, "Rod in butt", screw eyes, and that it was received in and shipped out of the warehouse to order number 41211 on October 20, 1899.

The wood remains very good with a few very minor dents and handling marks. The markings are clear. The action is fine. A solid example of a Model 1894 rifle with rare extra light full octagon barrel and extremely rare documented trapdoor butt.
