Estimate: $6500 - 9500
Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1894
Manufactured in 1908, this two barrel set consists of two 26 inch barrels with 1/2 magazines, Lyman blade and No. 6 folding leaf rear sights, sling eyes on the forend cap and a checkered walnut forearm. Both are marked with the Winchester oval proof on top at the breech. The barrel on the rifle is marked with the two line address/patent date on the left side ahead of the rear sight, with "NICKEL STEEL" and "38-55" at the left rear. The nickel steel was a special order feature for a 38-55 caliber barrel. The extra barrel is marked with the two line address/patent date on top ahead of the rear sight, and the nickel steel/smokeless powder marking and "32 W.S." on the left rear. The takedown levers are marked with the 1893 patent date. Blue finish with casehardened hammer and lever, tang mounted peep sight and checkered pistol grip stock with hard rubber Winchester grip cap, sling eye and steel crescent buttplate. The checkering on this rifle is the seldom seen Style "I" which was not offered in catalogs as were Styles A through H. It's also estimated that only 1 of approximately 725 Model 1894s had a pistol grip stock. The rifle is complete with the original hard leather mutton case for the rifle and both sets of barrels.
BBL: 26 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 38-55/32 W.S.
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 452166
Condition:
Very fine. The rifle retains 60% original blue finish with some minor muzzle wear, a mix of thin original blue finish and smooth brown patina on the forend cap, receiver and takedown ring. The hammer retains most of the original case colors while the lever shows a smooth gray patina with traces of original case colors in the protected areas. The buttplate has a smooth mottled gray patina. The wood is very good with some scattered minor dents and handling marks with crisp checkering. The extra barrel is excellent with 97% original blue finish showing some wear on the bottom of the barrel normally found on these takedown models, an area of smooth brown patina on the takedown lever where the finish has flaked off and some very light spotting on the forend cap. The forearm is fine with a few minor dents and very crisp checkering. The mutton case is fair with some heavy wear, some separated stitching and some restitching on the toe plug. Normally two barrel sets would be found with a 30-30 and 38-55 caliber barrels, it's unusual for a 38-55 and 32 W.S. to be together as a set.
