Spanish colonial era Miquelet flintlock escaopta or musket with stock of the type carried by soldiers and militia guarding the forts and missions in the Southwest during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The musket measures 15”overall with a 34 ½” barrel of approximately .72 caliber smooth. The metal surfaces show light to slightly heavy pitting and erosion with a dark patina. The frizzen has been resurfaced from a great deal of use and he front of the muzzle shows a loss of metal. There is an interesting period repair to the mainspring in front of the hammer which was accomplished during use. The stock is somewhat crude and probably restocked in the New World during the 19th century and this musketshows simple handmade brass bands on the barrel. Just the type of arm that would’ve been used by soldiers and militia at the mission San Juan Capistrano and other Southern California forts. Est.: $900-$1800
