These carbines were used throughout the Spanish American War and during the early 1900s until the development of the 1903 Springfield rifle. The left side of the receiver is marked "U.S./ 1896. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY." next to serial number. The carbine is mounted with an unmarked replacement stock and the original early handguard. It retains the barrel band that protects the rear sight and the trap door on the flat steel buttplate. Fitted with a tangent and ladder rear sight that is graduated to 18 on the blade and 6 on the left side and standard blade front sight.

Condition: Fine. The barrel retains traces of the original thinning blue finish. The receiver has a smooth gray patina and the magazine and trigger guard have a mix of original blue finish and smooth gray patina. The forward rear sight base screw is absent. The heavily worn stock is fair with a few long age cracks, numerous notches cut along the upper right side edge of the forearm and a few on the front upper left side, a hole through the front of the forearm and toe of the buttstock and two holes wear an upper tang was at one time. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
