South African Bushman Hand Made Animal Collection
Featured in this lot is this South African Bushman hand carved animal collection. The collection shows three insect figures, five bird figures, and a carved bird spoon. The first two insects are long tubular bugs with wire legs and fire blackened for texture. The last is a spider fetish that is well crafted and shows the likeness of a spider with fire blacked decoration for coloration. There are five different species of birds in this collection. The first is the largest and shows a speckled body with fire blackened coloration. The second shows a rooster hawk on top of the head with a fire darkened belly and speckled wings. The third is an owl figure with fire blackened body and white breasts. The fourth is a shorter, black spotted decoration with the spots shown as fire blackened decoration. The last is the smallest and has an almost full fire blackened body with a white collar and spots around it. The spoon shows a Hornbill head to the spoon and a wide girth lipped spoon base. The Hornbill symbolizes prosperity and fertility in cultural South Africa. The condition of this collection of hand-carved figures is good, with no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of this collection of birds are 9" x 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" for the largest bird, 7" x 3 1/4" x 5" for the second largest, 5 3/4" x 3 1/4" x 4" for the owl carving, 4 1/2" x 3 1/2" x 4 3/4" for the second to last, and 3"x 3" x 4 1/8" for the smallest bird.
