This lot features a great Smith & Wesson No.3 .44-40 Frontier Double Action Revolver. The revolver features a 5" barrel, bone grips, and a great deep aged patina. Only a bit over 15,000 of these rare Frontier revolvers were made in .44-40 with slightly longer cylinders than the more common standard Double Action in .44 Russian caliber. The Frontier model was only offered in .44-40 caliber and was also serial numbered in its own range. One of the more popular big bore six-guns in the West, it is known that famed outlaw John Wesley Hardin owned one. It was also a popular companion piece to the various Marlin and Winchester lever action rifles and carbines in this famous caliber. This example is in fine overall condition showing no cleaning or polishing, with smooth metal surfaces retaining a wonderfully attractive deep aged patina. Grips are of bone and show nice age. Sharp and clear barrel markings include the Smith and Wesson address as well as various 1860s to 1880 patent dates, front sight has not been filed or altered, all matching serial numbers on cylinder, frame, barrel latch and barrel. This was Smith & Wesson’s only top-break double action revolver made in the powerful and popular .44-40 chambering. A very scarce model difficult for the collector to locate. This particular early production revolver came out of Arizona. This revolver is a manufactured in the late 1880's. Antique firearm. NO FFL transfer or NICS background check required. Serial number is 3446.
