Offered for your bidding pleasure is a Smith & Wesson 2nd Model .38 Caliber Double Action Top Break Revolver. The revolver features a 5" barrel, top break design, 5 shot cylinder, silver front sight, and blue'd finish. This was S&Ws first double action .38 center fire caliber revolver. This example is unusually rare because of the 5” barrel. Most of these revolvers were made to be pocket guns with short 3 ¼” barrels the most popular and common. This unusual length puts this example more in the belt or holster category. All matching serial numbers, excellent mechanics and excellent sharp S&W markings and last patent date of 1889 on the barrel top. A particularly early and scarce variation of one of Smith & Wesson’s first entries into the double action revolver field which would later become what the company was best known for. Popular on the frontier as well as with urban dwellers of the late 19th century. Lovely aged blue metal that shows no cleaning or evidence of abuse or misuse. The revolver is in good condition. The grips have been replaced with a hardwood. The mechanics are tight and smooth. The bore is shows strong rifling. Antique firearm. NO FFL transfer or NICS background check required. The serial number is 371417.
