This is an immensely impressive fully beaded Coup Staff from a Sioux Native American Indian Warrior in the 20th Century. The piece shows a carved hard wood staff with canvas wrapping having a fully glass trade seed beaded surface. The beadwork shows a geometric traditional pattern with tepee/arrow and alternating rectangular symbols in a semi-transparent dark blue and red coloring having a chalk white base having various bands showing medium green, red, dark blue, and corn yellow. The Coup staff shows a large size and overall good condition. The piece is decorated with long Indian tanned hide fringe, bands of bear fur, drops of Turkey feathers, brass and tin trade bells, and various pieces of early trade clothe. The Coup staff would have been used by a Sioux Warrior on horseback to practice the art of warfare. The end of the staff, the hook, would have been stung out around an arm, leg or head of the opposing warrior pulling him from the horse. The coup staff is in the same design and styling of the pants, war shirt, headdress, moccasins, and breechclout (with each being sold separately). These were all displayed on the Indian mannequin sold after these pieces. The staff measures 73 1/2" tall, 13" wide, and 5 3/4" deep at the hoop. The entire ensemble was purchased for over $12,500 by the current Paradise Valley Livingston, Montana private Early American Artifact Collection.
