The lot features an original authentic set of Sioux Native American Indian fully beaded and painted leggings dating to circa 1870. These Indian Wars era beaded leggings show an Indian tanned pronghorn upper hide that is covered in green mineral pigment paint. The lower portion of the legging shows a Great American Bison Buffalo hide which appears to be remnants from an early polychrome painted envelope. The beadwork is all period correct 19th Century glass trade seed beads in a traditional geometric pattern having a chalk white background with cross symbols of cobalt and triangular Buffalo head like symbols of medium green, red white hearts, cobalt, and padre sky blue. The outer edge of the beadwork shows the original hide ties, a truly wonderful addition, along with a fancy beaded cobalt edge. The leggings are in very good museum quality condition with little to no bead loss. Provenance: These were found to be an authentic set of Sioux 1870 leggings by the experts at Reata Pass Auctions from an Arizona collection. The set would have been worn by a young warrior or a woman. Overall each legging measures 16"L by 6.5". The beadwork are measures 6.5"x5" when laid flat. The tie straps are approximately 5" to 6" L.
