This is an authentic circa 1870 Elk bone hide scraper from the Sioux Plains American Indians. The piece is hand carved from a Rocky Mountain Elk bone and was used to scrape the Great American Bison Buffalo hides. This example has a fantastic authentic patina with mellow coloring and worn hand hold gripping areas, a true testament to this pieces early authentic Indian Wars age. The hide scraper adze holder also shows hand carved engraved kill spots representing 35 Buffalo’s killed and scraped. The base of the scraper shows two old flathead screws along with additional wear. Provenance: From the private family collection of Sarah Alling of Helena, Montana. The family collection of Sarah Alling, a 5th Generation Montanan, began in the 19th Century and has grown since. Along with being an avid collector herself, Sarah co-founded with Bruce VanLandingham Sundog Fine Art of Bozeman, Montana which was both part museum and gallery. Overall measures 12.5”L x 5.5”W x 2”D.
