Sioux Beaded Skull Cracker War Club c. 1880
The lot features a bipoint stone head skull cracker war club being fully beaded and finished with a fringe drop from the Sioux Native American Indians of the 19th Century. At the top of the piece shows a bi-pointed finely worked stone head with traditional conical tapering points which is secured to the wood haft handle using a wrapping of parfleche rawhide and hoof hide glue. The entire head wrapping and haft is completely covered in period correct glass trade seed beads in colors of chalk white red white heart, blue and green being sinew sewn with overall good condition having expected slight bead loss and wear from its early age. The gripping area is covered with a Indian tanned buckskin hide wrapping which is further accented by a fringe hide gasket above and Indian tanned hide hand cut long frilly fringe drop below. The drop appears to have a slightly darker color, possibly from a mineral dye or much honest use. Overall the club has an attractive art appeal and is well preserved with some loss of beads that is very slight and some expected handling wear. The club measures 22”L with an additional 22”L fringe drop. The head is 6 7/8”L by 2.75” by 2.5”.
