Shelton No.4 & Fulton No. 3709 Bench Planes
For your consideration, a pair of vintage bench planes; a Shelton No. 4 and a Fulton No. 3709. The Shelton No. 4 is steel with wood handle and knob and brass nut and screw. It is is marked with patent number 1914609, granted June 20, 1933. The patent is for an improved mechanism for adjusting the blade using fewer parts. The patent number appears twice on the tool: one on the lever cap and the other on the top of the sole; interestingly, the patent number on the sole is missing the first 1, thus reading 914609. The plane is otherwise marked "Shelton", "Made in U.S.A." and "No.4". The second plane is a Fulton No 3709. The Fulton also is steel with wood handle and knob; the plane was made by Millers Falls for Sears Department Stores, circa 1952. The Fulton No. 3709, Stanley No. 3 and Millers Falls No. 8 are all the same model, made by Millers Falls. Both planes appear to be in good condition; both measure about 9 3/8" x 2 3/8" x 4 3/4".
