Sharps period conversion-to-cartridge rifle by famous early California gunsmith Benjamin Bigelow and so stamped on the barrel “B. Bigelow, Marysville”; .45 cal., 28” octagon barrel, blue and case hardened finish, woodstocks, #98906. This gun is in overall excellent condition showing the majority of its muted blue finish to the barrel, “.70 GR.” stamped on right side of barrel at breech, indicating .45-70 caliber; traces ofcase color on receiver with balance gone to a silvery tone, single trigger, lever retaining block, period Lawrence adjustable rear sight with period silver blade front sight (likely Bigelow’s work), fine woodstocks with butt stock showing flush metal base on inlet where originally the stock had a saddle ring arrangement; crisp action, fine bore. A highly collectible early “California Gun” by one of the famous GoldCountry gunsmiths and well-known civic leader; Bigelow held a number of firearms patents and his stampings are found on early customized heavy barreled percussion rifles but this is the first Sharps Sporting Rifle
