Sharps model 1878 sporting rifle, .45-70 caliber, 26” octagon barrel, serial #18608. The forend and barrel show old blackened leather wrap that is professionally stitched and the type done on the western frontier. The gun is in serial number range that may have been shipped to J.P. Lower Denver, at the end of production. The muzzle measures nearly 1” across the flats of the octagon barrel. The metal surfaces show a grey to brown patina finish with traces of blue on the forward portion of the barrel, some scattered erosion and pinprick pitting, mostly on the frame. A few screws are slightly marred, the butt stuck is oil stained from carry and use and shows some compression crack from honest carry and use, and is fair to good with small tacked in repair at top right, and other small losses and imperfections. The action is good, the bore is good with a couple areas of erosion but generally good overall. The original R.S. Lawrence rear sight is retained retains a large silver blade and post type front sight, favored on the frontier. Est: $3,000 - $6,000
