Sharps model 1877 sporting rifle, 42-1/2” straight, 28” standard weight octagon barrel, serial #D39. Barrel period stamped “J. P. Lower, Denver Col” Factory letter states, “The D-prefixed model 1877 special rifles were made using 1877 receivers and barrels from 1874 rifles. The price was lowered to $15 each to Lower. Dr. Lebowski describes the rifle in the letter and states the rifle was in the collection of Dr. John P. May, was appraised at $14,000 in the late 1990’s, and was in exceptionally fine condition for these cheap Sharps that saw hard use. The barrel shows 70-80% original blue that is thinning and toning with some just starting normal aging. The action, lock, and hammer, show 10-30% case hardening within a silvery-grey patina. The oil finish stocks show a slightly select grain and checkering on the forend and were oil finished. The stocks are very good plus and the numbers match which is unusual on these Lower model 77’s. The front and rear sight are original and all small original small parts are retained. The action is good, the bore is near excellent. An interesting late Sharps that went West and was sold on the frontier. Est: $6,000 - $12,000
