Sharps model 1874 rifle .40-70 Sharps straight caliber, invoiced as Hunter’s Rifle, double set trigger, 28” standard weight octagon barrel, serial #155961 shipped to A. J. Plate and Co, San Francisco, CA July 29, 1878, and showing original H. Slotterbek Los Angeles Cal. agent’s marking with Slotterbek’s characteristic arrow, proof, and gain twist wart steel marking along with turned collar which was his trademark. With factory letter and advertisement from old Flayderman catalog describing this rifle. The factory letter addressed 1988 to old time California collector Robert “Bob” Coelon of Blythe, CA. The rifle shows a brown to grey patina finish with scattered erosion and pinprick pitting, traces of original blue and case hardening mixed in. The rifle shows period large sling swivels added by Plate or Slotterbek, the rifle shows an original Winchester type carbine rear sight in the original dovetail and a target type front sight in the front dovetail which are aged to match and have likely been with the rifle. The stocks are fair with some scorching around the buttplate from stoking the camp fire. Some losses at the edges of the forend on each side. Some large chips at each edge of t
