Sharps model 1874 .40 caliber rifle, 26-1/2” round barrel, standard trigger, serial #159958. Factory information lists this rifle as invoiced January 23, 1877 to Sharps Agent and competition shooter Frank Hyde, Care ofW. L. Cushing and Moore, Galveston, Texas. The rifle is listed as .40 caliber with 1-11/16” shell, 26” barrel. The rifle was ordered with rear peep and beech sights, priced at $35. This rifle is in frontierrelic condition showing a neat brown patina finish, slightly heavy scattered pitting and erosion, rifle retains its original folding rear sight and period replaced large blade and post front sight in front dovetail. Thetang sight mentioned in the letter was removed long ago. The forend has been broken and is very worn from carry. The buttstock also has been reduced and heavily worn, and an associated old iron buttplate from carbine has been added. The stocks are weathered and dry, the metal shows exposure to the elements, the barrel address and frame markings are mostly legible. The action is surprisingly good and the bore is near
