Sharps New Model Conversion 50-70 SN: 68170
US Sharps New Model 1865 Cartridge Conversion Saddle Ring Carbine (SRC). 50-70, 22" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. Lever lock This was an original Civil War carbine, converted to metallic cartridge by the US government after the war had ended. (1867-68) The carbine has a blued barrel, the markings are a little shallow, front blade, R.S. Lawrence marked rear ladder sights, lower left barrel stamped "RSL", & "L.W."the receiver has a mottled gray patina with traces of case colors. The breech-block was fitted with the early, spring-loaded firing pin, and the original bore was left intact, unlike later conversions that had three-groove liners installed. The walnut forend and buttstock are very good/sound with minor blemishes scattered about the reapplied military oil finish. The buttstock itself was replaced during the conversion, does not have the original patch box, no cartouche, steel buttplate has some traces of case color.. The sling ring is present, the action locks up tightly, and is fully functional. Lawrence, & Sharps marking are crisp/clear on the right plate, the patent dates on the left plate are faint. This is a good the most desirable version of the post-war Sharps conversion. Antique Firearm
