This is an example of a Civil War Sharps New Model 1863 Carbine that was factory converted by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Co., to the .50-70 CF. cartridge with three groove barrel. This carbine features a pinned blade front sight and folding leaf rear sight graduated to 800 yards and marked with the Lawrence patent date marking. The barrel is stamped with an "F." on the left side near the breech and there is a faint three initial inspectors mark. The left side of the receiver is marked with the letter "S". The top of the barrel behind the rear sight is marked "NEW MODEL 1863". The left side of the receiver is marked "C. SHARPS PAT./SEPT. 12TH 1848" (very faint), and the right side plate is marked with the 1859 Lawrence patent date and the C. Sharps 1852 patent date. The serial number is marked on the upper tang. Mounted with a smooth forearm with a single barrel band and straight grip stock with a saddle ring bar and ring mounted on the left wrist, no patch box, ribbon cartouche on the left side and on the wrist, and steel buttplate.

Condition: Very fine as period arsenal refurbished with 80% plus blue finish on the barrel, showing some scattered minor oxidation and areas of smooth brown patina. The receiver, lock and hammer retain 75% plus case colors with a small area of minor spotting on the upper left side of the receiver. The wood is very fine with a large shallow chip on the left side of the forearm at the barrel band, otherwise there are a few minor scratches and pressure dents. The markings are clear. Mechanically excellent.
