Offered for sale is a historically important identified Sharps New Model 1863 Civil War .50-70 Carbine. This is an amazing find in the antique arms field is to find a Civil War weapon that can be positively identified to an individual assigned to a specific unit. This carbine with serial number 47985 is listed in the book CIVIL WAR SHARPS CARBINES AND RIFLES by John McAulay as being issued to a George Trump of Company L, 5th Ohio Cavalry. Only eleven serial numbers are known for this famed regiment and 47985 is one of them. Quoting from the book: "The 5th Ohio Cavalry was organized at Camp Dick Corwin, Ohio from September to November 1861. The regiment moved first to Kentucky and in early March moved to Tennessee. They were immediately assigned to the Army of the Tennessee and almost upon reaching the Army, saw action on an expedition to destroy bridges on the Mobile and Ohio Railroad. They were engaged in three skirmishes prior to the battle of Shiloh, where they also saw action. Following this battle, the regiment saw continual service. Raids, expeditions, skirmishes, and battles were common fare. In 1864, the regiment, as part of the 15th Corps, saw extensive activity with Sherman’s Army on the Atlanta campaign. The 5th Ohio remained with Sherman on the March to the Sea and the push up through the Carolinas. They were present at the surrender of the Confederate Army under Johnston. The 5th Ohio Cavalry was mustered out on October 30, 1865… The 5th Ohio Cavalry was armed with both Burnside and Sharps Carbines. The Sharps carbines listed here appear to be those originally issued to the regiment. The list dates from early 1862." A copy of this information from McAulay’s book will be provided with the Sharps. Preliminary research indicates that George Trump enlisted as a private and was discharged as a corporal. The 5th Ohio Cavalry fought at Shiloh, TN; Corinth, MS; Hatchie, MS; Jackson, MS; Chattanooga, TN; Battles for Atlanta; Reynolds Plantation, GA; Bentenville, NC; and General Sherman’s famed March to the Sea. No doubt, more research into George Trump and the 5th Ohio Cavalry would uncover a wealth of historical information that directly relates to this Sharps carbine. It is interesting to note that after the Civil War this carbine was returned to the Sharps Factory where it was refurbished and converted to .50-70 center fire cartridge and then re-issued to the cavalry for Indian War usage, giving this Sharps a double history. All in fine mechanical and outside condition with clear stock cartouches and Sharps markings. Showing honest use, but no abuse. Correct sights, excellent bore etc. with only the sling ring bar missing. A very rare opportunity to own a piece of identified Civil War history. Only an infinitesimally small percentage of antique arms can be positively identified to an individual, much less one that saw so much important and famous Civil War battles and American history. This is a antique firearm. NO FFL transfer or NICS background check required. Serial number is 47985.
