Sharps Model 1853 Slanting Breech Carbine
This is an example of a military inspected Sharps Model 1853 Carbine with a brass patch box, buttplate and flat brass barrel band. The barrel was blued and the receiver, breech block, hammer and loading lever are casehardened. The stock and forearm are smooth oil-finished black walnut. A sling bar with ring is attached to the left side barrel band and extends to the left rear of the receiver. The barrel is equipped with a brass blade front sight and replacement folding rear sight (leaf mounted backwards). The right side of the receiver has a spring-retained stud to secure the lever hinge pin. The carbine has the Sharps pellet primer system mounted in the lock. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "SHARPS RIFLE / MANUFG. CO. / HARTFORD CONN." reading from breech to muzzle, the left rear side is marked with the letter "M", "C. SHARPS / PATENT / 1848" and the serial number are stamped on the upper receiver tang and "SHARPS / PATENT / 1852" is stamped on the lock plate.

Condition: Very good. The barrel has a silver gray patina with some minor dents and dings. The lock plate and left side of the frame retain traces of the original case colors with the balance having a smooth silver gray patina. The hammer and lever have a smooth silver gray patina. The brass components have an aged patina. The wood has been re-oiled and remains very good with a small repaired crack on the right side wrist, a couple of small filled repairs and overall some minor dents and dings. The markings are clear. The action is very good.
