Sharps Model 1852 Percussion Carbine
Manufactured from 1853 to 1855 with a total production of approximately 5,000. This is the earliest Sharps Model with the distinctive "slanting breech" and is fitted with the lever hinge pin retaining spring mounted on the right rear of the forearm. The breech end of the barrel is marked with the three line Sharps address, the upper tang "C. SHARPS / PATENT / 1848" followed by the serial number and the lock is marked "SHARPS / PATENT / 1852". Matching serial number on the upper tang, and on the back of the breechblock, with the inside of the patch box door and stock in the patch box numbered "229". Brass blade front and folding "squirrel ear" rear sights, brass mountings, sling swivel mounted on the barrel band and lower tang, the saddle ring bar is absent and mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a carbine buttplate. ( Page 46 of "Sharps Firearms" by Frank Sellers identifies this as a "plain varnished" grade of carbine, one of 129 produced). A casehardened iron forend cap and lower rear plate have been installed on the forearm.

Condition: Fine with streaks of heat blue finish mixed with smooth gray patina on the barrel. The receiver retains 40% of the aforementioned bright heat blue finish and the hammer and lock have a smooth gray patina with some faded case colors on the lock. The brass has an aged patina. The wood remains fine with some crazing of the finish on the stock and overall some scattered minor dings and dents. The markings are clear. Mechanically excellent.
