Sharps Model 1851 sporting rifle with Maynard tape primer device showing 28” octagon barrel of .36 caliber, serial number 1656. The barrel shows considerable original finish drifting to a natural patina with good sharp edges and light but visible markings and the frame shows traces of case colors with some minor erosion and pinprick pitting. Sharply marked on primer door and on tang. The stock is very good plus with some minor oil staining at edges, slight losses, and normal aging but most of the original varnish remains and shows a good wood grain. The brass mounts show a mellow patina. The tang is factory drilled for a sight which is missing. The action is tight and the bore is very good and still shiny. From a premier Sharps collector who favors these early rifles as they were carried by pioneers and Mormons headed west. Est.: $6,000-$12,000.
