Sharps Breech loading single shot pistol, .36 cal., 5” round barrel, wood grips, #243, lightly hand inscribed on the backstrap “Louis W. Chouteau”. This gun is in overall very good condition showing a light brownpatina to barrel and silvery toning to frame, slight hints of case colors in protected areas and some scattered age staining; very good bore, clear maker’s mark on left side of frame indicating first model “Sharps PatentArms Mf ed Fair Mount Phila PA”; crisp action, very good to near fine grips. Consignor handwritten note in part states, “On the backstrap of this Sharps pistol is a very faint inscription ‘Louis Chouteau’ whowas an Indian Agent and Osage Interpreter; also the grandson of Pierre Chouteau of Fur Trading fame and co-founder of the City of St. Louis, Mo.”; consignor also notes pistol was previously in the collection ofentertainer Buddy Hackett 25 years ago and has been in consignor’s collection since then. Approximately 500 of this first model single shot pistol were manufactured in the mid-1850’s. Est.: $3,000-$6,000.
