Colt Model 1883 Double-Barrel Hammerless Shotgun manufactured in 1890. The shotgun has 28-inch Damascus finished barrels with a matted rib and brass bead front sight. The receiver and upper tang have a color casehardened finish and the trigger guard and breech lever are blued. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured, fancy grade walnut with a varnish finish. The stock and forearm have fine checkered panels. The forearm tip has a horn insert and the stock has a black, checkered hard rubber buttplate with the embossed Rampant Colt trademark in a circle. The underside of the stock has a small, oval German Silver inlay. The barrel rib is marked: "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." in a single line. The underside of the receiver is engraved: "PATENTED/AUG 22, SEP 19, 1882". The serial number "5239" is engraved on the lower tang. The serial number "5239**" is stamped on the inside of the forearm. "5239" is stamped on the forearm latch, the barrels and on the inside of the receiver. All of the visible serial numbers match. The receiver, trigger guard, upper and lower tang and breech lever are engraved with finely executed borders of scalloped and double line borders. The Colt Model 1883 Double-Barrel Hammerless Shotgun is considered by experts to be one of the finest made of all Colt products and one of the very finest American shotguns.
