Scarce Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Rifle with No. 4 Barrel and Factory Letter

Winchester Model 1885 High Wall rifle with Cody Firearms Museum letter. The letter describes the rifle features as "32/40 Caliber, #4, 36 inch, Round barrel" and "Plain trigger". The letter further states that this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on December 20, 1902. The rifle has a blue finish on the barrel and receiver with casehardened lever, breechblock, trigger and hammer. The stock and forearm are straight grain walnut with an oil finish. The tip of the forearm has an ebony insert and the underside of the stock is tapped for a detachable sling swivel mount. The stock has a scarce shotgun buttplate. The black hard rubber buttplate is checkered and embossed with the round Winchester logo. The heavy round No. 4 barrel is fitted with a dovetail mounted Winchester globe front sight and a sporting style rear sight. A folding Vernier peep sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The top of the barrel is roll stamped "MANUFACTURED BY THE/- WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN.U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber "32-40" is roll stamped on the top of the barrel at the breech. The serial number, "87369" is stamped on the lower receiver tang in script numerals.

Excellent. The rifle retains 95% plus of the original high polish blue finish. There is some light edge wear at the muzzle and two small patches of shallow pitting on the top of the barrel about seven inches from the muzzle. The edges of the receiver have some minor finish wear. There are several light scratches on the left side of the receiver and some small patches of flaking on the left side of the receiver. The breech block, hammer and lever retain 95% plus of the casehardened finish. The barrel markings are crisp. The stock and forearm are excellent and retain 80% plus original finish. The forearm has some finish wear and the stock has a few scattered and very minor handling marks. This is an excellent example of a Winchester Model 1885 High Wall rifle with scarce No. 4 heavy barrel.
