These unique Musketoons were so named "Monkey Tail" because of the Westley Richards & Company patented design of the breech opening system which is a lift lever in the position of the upper tang. The lock is dated "1867" in a triangle behind the hammer and marked "WESTLEY RICHARDS & Co" ahead of the hammer. The top of the barrel behind the rear sight is marked "WHITMORE PATENT", ".485" and ".451" flanking a "R/WR" at the breech and left side of the receiver is marked with various British proofs. "P/C" and the serial number. The top of the breechblock is marked "WESTLEY RICHARDS/PATENT" and a triangle at the rear. Blade front sight and adjustable leaf rear sight graduated to 800 meters, bayonet lug and sling swivel mounted on the right side of the barrel band (lug numbered to the gun), brass trigger guard with sling swivel, an original iron ramrod and mounted on a full pistol grip stock with a brass forend cap and buttplate. The left flat is stamped "F.A./1882" and "399" vertically.

Condition: Very good. The barrel has a smooth brown patina, the breechblock has a smooth dark patina and the lock and hammer have a smooth mottled gray patina. The brass has a very pleasant natural dark aged patina. The stock is also very good, with overall scattered minor dings and dents associated with a gun of this age. All markings are clear. Mechanically excellent.
