Manufactured in 1855 of an estimated total quantity of 1,020 produced. The lock plate is marked "SPRING/FIELD/1855" vertically behind the hammer and has the "eagle" motif over "US" ahead of the hammer. The barrel tang is dated "1855" and the left rear barrel has the "V/P/eagle head" proofs. All parts are finished bright. Iron blade front sight and three folding leaf rear sight. Two-piece trigger guard with a large round sling ring mounted on the rear. A button head ramrod is affixed to the muzzle by a large, oval, U-shaped iron swivel. Mounted with a three-quarter length straight grip walnut stock secured by a single iron barrel band with a brass forend cap and steel buttplate marked "US" on the tang. The left stock flat has a faint "JS" cartouche. This weapon has been modified to .58 caliber from the original .54 caliber, which is common for this model.

Condition: Good. The metal surfaces have been polished and now exhibit an attractive smooth gray patina. There is a patch of pitting near the muzzle (right side). The revarnished stock is good with some chipping along the ramrod channel, and some minor handling marks. Mechanically fine.
