Manufactured in 1853 as one of an estimated 3,359 produced. The lock plate is marked "SPRING / FIELD / 1853" vertically behind the hammer and the eagle motif over "US" is marked ahead of the hammer. The barrel tang is dated "1853". Sling swivels are present on the rear barrel band and on butt near toe with a brass blade front sight on the front band which is stamped with the letter "L" on the underside. The smooth bore barrel has a bayonet stud on the underside and "V / P / eagle head" markings on the left side at the breech. The tang of the buttplate is marked "U.S." The stock has a "JS" boxed cartouche on the left flat. Complete with an iron trumpet head ramrod.

Condition: Fine. The metal surfaces are bright with some scattered pin point pitting and very crisp markings. Traces of nitre blue are visible on trigger. The stock is fine with crisp edges, scattered minor dents, and a repair visible near the lock plate screw. Cartouche is clear and legible.
