This example is one of about 3,000 Sharps New Model 1859 Carbines with brass furniture. The state of Georgia bought approximately 2,000 and it is known that they were issued to the Georgia cavalry and infantry units. The top of the barrel is marked "SHARPS RIFLE/MANUFG CO/HARTFORD CONN." just in front of the rear flip up sight marked "R.S. LAWRENCE/PATENTED/FEB 15th 1859" on the base and graduated to 700 yards. The barrel is also marked "NEW MODEL 1859" near the breech end of the barrel. The left side of the receiver is marked "SHARPS' PAT/SEPT. 12th 1848", the top tang is marked with the serial number, the right side of the lock plate is marked "R.S. LAWRENCE PAT/APRIL 12th 1859" just under the pellet primer and "C.SHARPS' PAT/OCT. 5th 1852" in the center. Mounted on a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a saddle ring bar on the left wrist, a brass patch box, a smooth curved brass buttplate and a rear sling swivel.

Condition: Good, the barrel has a mottled brown patina with a few rough areas and there is a deep nick present on the right side of the barrel just in front of the forearm. The casehardened components also have an untouched mottled brown patina with some areas of minor pitting. The brass components have a dark aged patina with distoration and tool marks present on the top of the battered buttplate. The moderately worn wood is good with numerous scratches, dings and dents, with an old coat of protective varnish applied. There is some chipping and cracking at the toe, heel, rear of the sling bar and rear of the tangs. The left side of the buttstock has period applied "RAC" initials incised in 1 inch tall letters.
