Scarce Sharps Model 1851 percussion carbine in 52 cal. with Maynard tape primer device, serial #1778. One of only approx 1,857 made, refer Flayderman 5F-003.5. The carbine remains in good to very good originalcondition with a light gray to brown patina. The stocks are also very good showing considerable varnish with minor nicks, mars & small losses, some marks on the comb and minor stock imperfections. The markings aregood on lock and barrel, original sights and small parts are retained. A few screws have been replaced professionally. The action is good, the bore is good with strong rifling and some slight erosion and pitting. A keyearly Sharps and approx 50 were purchased by the state of New York and sold to the Federal Government later during the Civil War, unfortunately the serial numbers of these guns is not known and they were not militarymarked.
