Scarce Remington-Jenks Mule Ear Carbine with Tape Primer Serial Number 54

Estimate: $2250 - 3500
This is a nice example of a scarce and desirable Jenks carbine with the Maynard tape primer mechanism manufactured by E. Remington & Sons, Herkimer, N.Y. circa 1847-48. The Jenks-Remington Carbine was manufactured under a contract for about 1,000 carbines between William Jenks and the Bureau of Ordnance and Hydrography. The carbines were to be manufactured by N. P. Ames of Springfield, Massachusetts. Ames subsequently sold the contract and carbine machinery to Remington who completed the entire contract. The Remington-Jenks Carbines differ from the earlier Jenks "Mule Ear" Carbines primarily in the inclusion of a Maynard Tape Primer magazine and modified hammer. The carbine has a brown barrel and the trigger, lock, and breechblock casehardened. The buttplate, trigger guard and barrel bands are brass. A steel saddle ring is attached to the trigger guard finial. The lock plate is marked "REMINGTON'S/HERKIMER/N.Y." behind the hammer. The barrel is marked on the flat in front of the breech "W. JENKS" followed by "U.S.N./RP/P/1847/CAST- STEEL". Mounted with a full straight grip walnut stock with a boxed "RP" cartouche on the left flat. These well-made and handsome carbines were issued by the U.S. Navy during the Mexican-American War.
BBL: 24 1/4 inch round

Serial Number: 54
Condition: Very fine. The barrel retains 80% of the original brown finish with a little more than an 1 1/2 inches of the muzzle having been cleaned. The lock has a smooth gray patina and the remaining metal surfaces have a smooth dark patina. There is a number electro penciled on the bottom of the hammer and a white "205" marked on the trigger guard and bottom of the stock next to the trigger. The stock is fine with a 3 inch crack on the right side of the buttstock near the toe and a 1 1/2 inch hairline crack on the opposite side, otherwise some scattered minor pressure dents and scratches. The markings and cartouche are crisp. The action is excellent.
