Scarce Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol with Variant Eagle Marking

This is an example of a rare Variant Eagle marking U.S. Model 1836 flintlock pistol. The lock is marked only with an awkward Eagle motif with a shield on it's chest ahead of the hammer and there are no other makers markings present. The double necked hammer retains the heart shaped piercing instead of the usually found circular piercing. It conforms in every other way to the standard Model 1836. Very little is known about this type and it is possible that it is a prototype or developmental piece for a special militia contract. Its unknown how many exist. The breech end of the barrel is marked "US/JM/P". There is a "J" stamped on the left side plate and lower tang. The pistol is armory bright, with iron mountings and a detachable brass flash pan, iron swivel ramrod with button head, full back strap extending from the butt cap to the barrel tang and mounted with a smooth walnut stock.

Fine. The metal surfaces, except the lock, frizzen and hammer, have a smooth mottled silver gray patina, while the frizzen, hammer and lock have a smooth mottled brown patina. The stock is also very good with a few scratches on the left flat, a small pieced-in repair at the rear of the lock, and overall some scattered minor scratches and dents. The action is excellent.
