Scarce Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol with Variant Eagle Marking

Estimate: $1600 - 2250
This is an example of a Variant eagle marking 1836 flintlock pistol. The lock is marked only with an awkward eagle motif with a shield on it's chest ahead of the hammer and there are no other makers markings present. The double necked hammer has a circular piercing instead of the usual heart shape. It conforms in every other way to the standard Model 1836. Very little is known about this type and it is possible that it is a prototype or developmental piece for a special militia contract. Its unknown how many exist. The breech end of the barrel is marked "US/JM/P". There is a "P" stamped on the left side plate and lower tang. The pistol is armory bright, with iron mountings and a detachable brass flash pan, swivel ramrod with button head, full back strap extending from the butt cap to the barrel tang and mounted with a smooth walnut stock.
BBL: 8 1/2 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 54
Finish: bright
Grips:
Serial Number: nsn
Condition: Good. The metal surfaces have a bright appearance with some flash pitting on the breech end of the barrel and some minor pitting on the barrel band. The very good refinished stock has been repaired at the butt from an apparent break, (appears to have been broken off) and the stock remains solid. The markings are clear. The action is very good. A solid example of a little known type of Model 1836 flintlock pistol.
