Scarce Mexican War Pattern 1841 Dragoon Saber Belt with Pattern 1839 Belt Plate

Estimate: $950 - 1400
White buff leather Dragoon Saber Belt with Pattern 1839 Enlisted Dragoon or Rifleman Belt Plate and both saber straps. This was the regulation saber belt for Dragoons armed with the Model 1836 or Model 1840 Cavalry Sabers and remained in service until the adoption of the black buff leather Pattern 1851 Saber Belt and Pattern 1851 Belt Plate. The belt is complete with the original brass parade hook and brass finals on the saber straps. Both saber straps match the condition of the belt perfectly. The oval, brass, Pattern 1839 Belt Plate has a lead back and 'puppy paw' fasteners and belt hook. The hanger for the front saber strap and cross strap is secured by a copper rivet which was a period addition. This belt like, almost all surviving examples, is missing the cross-strap.

Condition: Very good. The buff leather has yellowed slightly from age but remains in very fine condition. The belt plate has a very attractive patina and has minor dents above and below the cast "US". The belt has been shortened by several inches and a number of additional holes have been punched in the body of the belt. This is a very good example of a scarce and desirable Mexican War Dragoon Belt with belt plate.
