Estimate: $1000 - 2000
Manufactured circa 1864 to 1865 with a very limited number produced. The carbine is one of the very few arms made in the West during the Civil War and very little is recorded about the arm. It is known that the U.S. War Department placed an order of 1000 carbines in 1865 but a misunderstanding caused the entire lot to be rejected by the government because the barrels had the incorrect bore. The left side of the barrel is marked "LEE'S FIREARMS CO. MILWAUKEE, WIS./PAT'D JULY 22, 1862". Blade front and two leaf rear sight with a saddle ring bar and ring mounted on the left side of the frame. Mounted with a smooth stock showing no noticeable markings. The serial number, 1921 is lightly visible on internal frame under the barrel.
BBL: 21 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 44 RF
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 1921
Condition: Period refurbished, possibly by arsenal. The carbine retains most of the arsenal blue finish with the balance a smooth dark brown patina. The barrel markings are faint on the left side. The stock is excellent with some scattered minor pressure dents. Action needs work as the hammer does not hold a full cock position.
