Manufactured in 1867. Standard one line New York barrel address on the top barrel flat, "COLTS/PATENT" on the left side of the frame, "31 CAL" on the trigger guard shoulder and stagecoach holdup scene roll-engraved on the cylinder. The left side of the barrel lug is marked with a "crown/V' and "crown/GP" proof marks with the two alternating between each chamber on the cylinder. The matching serial number is marked on the barrel, frame, scarce iron trigger guard and backstrap with an "L" either above or below each number, "7039" is on the arbor pin and cylinder, "97039" is on the wedge and 039" on the loading lever. The cylinder is roll engraved with the stagecoach holdup scene and marked "COLTS PATENT" over the serial number. Iron trigger guard and back strap, blue finish with casehardened hammer, frame and loading lever and fitted with a smooth one-piece varnished walnut grip. The revolver is complete in a wooden case with brown velvet lining. The case has five compartments and in the case is a brass Colt marked two cavity bullet mold, Eley Bros. lacquered cap tin with about 15 percussion caps, eagle shield and stars powder flask, key and an opened, partially full (5 count) combustible envelope cartridges.

Condition: Excellent. The revolver retains 90% bright original high polish blue finish with some edge wear, flaking on the cylinder and some tool marks on the rear of the barrel. The hammer, frame and loading lever retain 97% original bright case colors. The grips are excellent with 98% plus original varnish remaining, some very minor wear on the lower right edge and a few overall scattered minor handling marks. The cylinder scene and markings are clear. The action is excellent. The case is fine. The lid is slightly warped. The lining has faded some and shows some contact wear and soiling. The cartridge box is partially open and three cartridges are absent. The remaining accessories are very good with an aged patina on the flask and bullet mold.
