Designed by John Thomas, Remington master mechanic, the Remington Cane Gun was a signature weapon for the firm in the post-Civil War era. Chiefly seen in center and rim fire configuration, the percussion style is limited to the earliest arms in the run. 36 inches long, with a metal tip marked "J.F. THOMAS/PATENT/(illeg.)/REMINGTON & SONS/ILION, N.Y./59" metal ring with pin front sight, Gutta Percha shaft covering, top-positioned firing button, and a silver collar at the base of the 4 1/2 inch "L" pattern stag grip. Pulling back on the handle exposes the percussion nipple and cocks the striker. Writer has never seen a Remington cane gun with a stag handle, so we cannot guarantee that it began life with it. None the less, it is still a very rare cane gun.
