This is a scarce London Armory Kerr's patent percussion revolver with a Confederate "J.S./anchor" marking on the grip just below the frame tang. The "J.S./Anchor" stamping on London Armory Kerr revolvers is discussed in detail by William A. Albaugh III in "Confederate Handguns". Albaugh documented a number of Confederate Kerr revolvers with this marking and concluded that the "J.S./Anchor" stamp was applied as an export stamp for revolvers purchased by the Confederate government. "Confederate Revolvers" by William A. Gary briefly discusses the mark and that it is believed that the "JS" is for J. Smiles, a stock maker in London. The top strap and lock plate are stamped with a small "R[anchor]C" inside an oval, an oval proof is stamped on most of the components and two screw heads have the number "241". The frame has a light floral engraving along some of the edges. Checkered grip with a steel buttplate with a lanyard ring and the number "136" stamped on the left side.
BBL: 5 3/4 inch octagon
Stock:
Gauge: 44 percussion
Finish: blue
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 2744
Condition: Fine. The revolver has a mottled gray patina with some mild pitting. The buttplate is missing a screw. The repaired grip is fair with worn checkering and some minor pressure dents. Mechanically needs work as it only works in single action. The Kerr revolver was a high quality weapon that saw wide service in the Confederate Armies. A Kerr revolver with the scarce "J.S./Anchor" markings would be a key piece in any advanced Civil War collection.
