These revolvers were manufactured circa 1861-62. Approximately 3,000 of this Civil War era revolver were manufactured by the Joslyn Firearms Company of Stonington, Connecticut. Some of these revolvers were purchased through the open market and were issued to the U.S. military with almost all of the revolvers issued to the 5th and 6th Ohio Cavalry regiments. The top barrel flat is stamped "B.F. JOSLYN/PATD MAY 4th 1858.". This standard model revolver has an iron trigger guard, a solid frame, a 5-shot cylinder, a side mounted hammer and checkered walnut grips. The matching full serial number "1140" is stamped on the butt and barrel with the number "1617" on the loading lever and "40" on the loading lever catch. The cylinder has the number "5800." The underside of the frame ahead of the trigger guard plate and the loading lever catch are stamped with the letter "B". Fitted with a set of checkered walnut grips with "1140" on the inside of each grip.

Condition: Fine, 30% of the original dull military style finish remains, mostly in the protected areas with the hammer and trigger guard retaining 90% blue finish with the balance a smooth brown/gray patina. The loading lever is mismatched. The grips are both fine with some scattered minor scratches and dings. Mechanically fine.
