Scarce Civil War Ball Repeating Carbine

E.G. Lamson & Co., of Windsor, Vermont, c. 1865. Lamson & Co., manufactured 1,002 of the Ball Carbines for an Ordnance Department contract in 1864. The carbines were delivered to the Ordnance Department in May 1865 just after the end of the Civil War. The carbine has a seven shot magazine, sling bar and ring on the left side of the receiver and folding rear sight graduated to 600 yards. The barrel has a military blue finish, the barrel bands, receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate are casehardened and the stock and forearm are oil finished walnut. The left side of the receiver is roll stamped "E.G. LAMSON & CO./WINDSOR. VT./U.S./BALLS PATENT./JUNE, 23, 1863./MARCH, 15, 1864." in six lines. A "P" and a Ordnance final inspection mark that consists of three script initials with a rectangular border are stamped on the left side of the stock wrist immediately behind the receiver.

Fine. The carbine retains 60% of the original blue finish. The blue finish on the barrel has some scattered surface discoloration. The case colors remain 30% intact and have aged on the balance to a brown patina. The stock and forearm are very good with numerous minor handling marks. The receiver markings are crisp and the Ordnance proof and inspection marks are faint but legible. This is a solid example of a scarce Civil War carbine.
