This is an example of a Remington-Lee Model 1882 rifle that was part of a Chinese contract with an early production 28 inch barrel. Note the the serial number of this rifle (9657) falls out of the observed serial number ranges (14,058-20,768 and 23,244-24,897) of the Chinese contract rifles as listed by Eugene Myszkowski in his book THE REMINGTON-LEE RIFLE, page 32. The receiver ring has the Chinese ideogram which reads, "Manufactured by Remington Factory of America, The Jui Sheng Import Co. of Shanghai, Agents". The left receiver wall has the two line Remington marking and the upper left receiver flat has the two line 1879 patent date marking and the serial number. The barrel has the lug on the right side for a saber bayonet as seen on Chinese contract rifles, "U" marked barrel bands and a rear sight with a base graduated to 500 yards and a leaf graduated to 1,200 yards. Mounted on a smooth straight grip stock.
BBL: 28 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 45-70 Government
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 9657
Condition: Very good. The rifle has a mottled brown patina with the receiver retaining 25% faded original blue finish. The barrel has a line of minor pitting from the muzzle to the rear barrel band. The stock is also very good with a surface chip missing near the buttplate, a hairline stress crack near the receiver tang and some minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
