Scarce Cased Confederate London Armoury Kerr Patent Percussion Revolver with Accessories

This is a scarce Kerr's patent percussion revolver with a Confederate "J.S./anchor" marking on the grip just below the frame tang (faint). The "J.S./Anchor" stamping on Kerr revolvers is discussed in detail by William A. Albaugh III in "Confederate Handguns". Albaugh documented a number of Confederate Kerr revolvers with this marking and concluded that the "J.S./Anchor" stamp was applied as an export stamp for revolvers purchased by the Confederate government. "Confederate Revolvers" by William A. Gary briefly discusses the mark and that it is believed that the "JS" is for J. Smiles, a stock maker in London. The left side of the frame is marked LONDON/ARMOURY" in an oval, the right side of the frame is engraved: "KERR'S PATENT 3351". The cylinder is also numbered "3351". The left barrel flat is stamped: "L.A.C." followed by British "crown/GP" and "crown/ V" proof and inspection marks. Similar proof and inspection marks are stamped between each chamber of the cylinder. The revolver has a high polish blue finish on the barrel and frame, and casehardened loading lever, trigger guard, side plate and hammer. The one-piece grip is finely checkered English walnut. The butt is fitted with a lanyard ring. Comes in a English oak case with a round brass initial escutcheon on the lid and six compartments lined with wine colored velvet. The original "London Armoury" label is present on the inside of the lid and the case contains an empty cap tin by F. Joyce, London , an ebony cleaning rod and a brass capper stamped "SYKES" in small letters. Kerr revolvers were high quality firearms that saw limited use in the American Civil War.

Very good plus overall. The barrel retains 30% of the original bright blue finish mixed with a smooth brown patina. The cylinder has a gray patina and some minor pitting, the nipples appear to be original to the gun and are lightly pitted. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth gray patina. The grips are very good showing moderate wear and only a few minor dings. All markings are clear. The action is tight. The case is very good with some scattered minor dents and scratches on the outside. The interior is very good, wear is limited to where the cylinder and hammer rub and there is some soiling. The label is fully intact. All of the accessories are very good, the foil on the cap tin is cracking and peeling from age, with a piece separated, the capper, as well as the brass on the cleaning rod have an aged patina. This is a very nice high quality cased Kerr revolver with accessories.
