This is an example of a U.S. contract Colt Model 1911A1 automatic Pistol that was manufactured in 1942. Colt M1911A1 pistols in this serial number range were shipped to the Springfield Armory between in September and October 1942. The pistol has the early WWII production "W.B." final inspection mark. The trigger is milled with a knurled face, the wide-spur hammer has a knurled spur, the pain spring housing, safety lock and slide stop are checkered. The stocks have large reinforcing rings around the screw holes with strengthening ribs and mold numbers on the inside. The full-blued magazine is stamped with the "S" maker's code (Scovill Mfg., Co.) on the top of the floor plate lip. The barrel is stamped: "COLT 45 AUTO" on the lower left side of the chamber and has a "P" proofmark on the left side of the barrel lug. A large "G" is stamped on the underside of the barrel ahead of the lug. The right side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "UNITED STATES PROPERTY/No842393" behind the slide stop hole and "M1911A1 U.S.ARMY" in a single line in front of it. The left side of the receiver is stamped with a "3" assembler's mark over the Colt triangle/VP proofmark. The Ordnance final inspection mark that consists of the initials "W.B." enclosed in a rectangle is stamped below the slide stop. A "P" proofmark is stamped below the magazine release. A "G" production order mark is stamped on the top of the receiver to the right of the disconnector hole. The receiver feed ramp is polished bright. The slide is fitted with the Improved Model of 1911, half-moon front sight. The serial number, "842/393" is stamped on the rear of the slide above and below the firing pin hole. A "P" proofmark is stamped on the top of the slide. The left side of the slide is roll-stamped with the 1897-1913 patent dates in a two-line block followed by the Rampant Colt trademark and "COLT'S PT.F.A.MFG.CO./HARTFORD,CT. U.S.A." in a two line block.
