Saxon style wheel lock rifle with ornately and high quality bone inlaid stock which is circa early 17th century and lock and barrel were replaced during its period of use, estimated post 1700. The stock shows duelcheek pieces with beautiful inlays of King with attendants on right, angel playing mandolin on bottom, bare breasted lady with attendants and other figures of ladies, animals, beasts, angels, mermaids, scrollsetc. 90% of the inlays are original, 10% are restorations. The trigger guard appears to have been added also when lock and barrel replaced. The lock is nicely engraved and signed and shows an inside wheel. Thesignature reads “Andres Gr over 2nd line IN Avgspvp”. The gun measures 48-1/4” with 37” barrel of approx. 36 cal rifled. The royal courts of Europe preferred wheel locks to Flints for target shooting and older gunswere reworked and updated for this purpose. From an old N.Y. collector’s estate. Est.;$3,500-$7,000.
