Saving Private Ryan Hand Grenade Movie Props
Saving Private Ryan (1998) - Winner of five Academy Awards, the film is universally celebrated for setting the gold standard in cinematic realism, brought to life through the meticulous period armaments supplied by armorer Simon Atherton and the film's military prop department. This original stunt grenade is constructed from solid metal, styled after the iconic US military Mk 2 "Pineapple" fragmentation hand grenade. Featuring period-accurate olive drab paint, a cast segmented body, and a metal safety lever (spoon) assembly, this heavy-duty prop was crafted to give actors real-world tactile weight and durability without using active ordnance. Throughout Captain Miller’s (Tom Hanks) journey across Normandy, US infantrymen carry Mk 2 grenades clipped prominently to their webbing, canvas assault jackets, and cartridge belts. While soft rubber grenades were used for high-impact throwing shots near actors, solid metal stunt variants like this were used for realistic webbing rig weight, close-up belt harness shots, and scenes where characters pull pins or handle ordnance directly (such as the intense combat in Omaha Beach, the radar station assault, or the final stand in Ramelle). Dale Dye’s grueling ten-day boot camp forced the cast to handle realistic military kit. Metal props provided authentic weight distribution on the soldier's gear, ensuring the military web gear sagged and swung naturally as performers sprinted, ducked, and crawled through mud and sand.
