Santee Sioux Beaded High-Top Moccasins c. 1880-90
The lot features an excellent set of early Santee Sioux Native American Indian beaded moccasins dating to circa 1880-1890. The moccasins show an Indian tanned hide construction with a worn soft parfleche soles sewn with sinew having a low-height Indian tanned hide ankle that is accented by a fancy scalloped cut edge. The front of the moccasins shows excellent petit glass trade seed beads in semi-transparent blue, semi-transparent, semi-transparent rose, greasy yellow, Cheyenne pink, medium green, violet semi-transparent, cobalt and chalk white. The beadwork pattern is in a wonderful traditional geometric floral combination, a style almost exclusively found on Santee Sioux and other Eastern Sioux pieces. The original hide ties are still intact with Germantown yarn drops, a wonderful rare addition. Provenance: From a Manheim, Pennsylvania collection. These are truly an excellent set of beaded moccasins that have been well preserved in good condition. The soles of each moccasin show old Indian tanned hide repairs, a true testament to its early age. Each shows a 9 inch sole and 3 ¼ inch high ankle.
